What, to do a minstrel show?
I just wanted to announce that Trav and I have just been invited to a shindig at the African American Musuem Facility at the Cincinnati Museum Center.
Kinda bursts your preconceived notions of us, doesn't it, Tomas?

Nope. It's a CD release.
We probably won't be the only white faces, but I'll put money on the fact that we'll be the only white conservative faces.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No, not so much. My notions about you and your trained monkey are based on what you present here, on this forum. They are conceived from what you say not preconceived based on other arbitrary information. I don't have any other information to base a "preconception" on so it's kind of meaningless to use the term here.Kinda bursts your preconceived notions of us, doesn't it, Tomas?
It fits right in with my observations about trav trying to absolve himself from responsibility for what he writes here. He just doesn't seem to get it that it doesn't matter if he means what he says or not. Either way he's still a mean spirited, narrow minded, jerk.
How could anyone need Pinata?
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Well, so much for that ignore thing. You did better this time though, I'm impressed. Give it another go. Uhm, why not try for a couple more days?Originally posted by cincygreg:

Pi?a,
What you can't quite grasp is that this board is a playground.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">First off, you didn't need that second comma. (Please see the Books thread on Salon for more information.)Either way he's still a mean spirited, narrow minded, jerk.
Trav is neither mean-spirited nor narrow minded. However, when he ignores the dishwasher and leaves his things on the counter, I can agree with you on the jerk part.
Now, go back to your regular liberal rants.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Doesn't matter. You either mean what you say here or you don't. If you do then, well frankly, you paint yourselves as pretty nasty peices of work and if you don't then who cares what you have to say?Originally posted by gae:

If you're just playing at being jackasses then for your own comfort level just read my stuff in the same fun loving light that you say you're posting yours. No problem, no foul.
Truth is that I mean what I post, but if it makes you feel better then interpret it any way you want. I am going to continue to consider what you write as representative of how you actually feel, that you aren't ashamed of those viewpoints (though it seems like you're saying you are), and that you are man enough (we know how you feel about those inferior womens) to take your lumps. Of course you are free to "play act" the rabid neo-conservative as much as you want but I'm going to continue to hold your feet to the fire for it.
I mean if this is just fun and games for you then what does it matter how I see it? I think you do protest too much.
Personally, how anyone can put thought into someone meaning something or not when we don't even use real names around to begin with seems kind of like a joke to me. If it makes you think cool, but that is just me...
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Actually I find it to be a fascinating meta-discussion about the sociology of online communications. Consider that we have, in essence, a microcosm here with participants establishing their personas based solely on what they write here. The question of whether they are being honest about their beliefs or "just kidding" becomes important from a reputation standpoint. If they define themselves as being dishonest, i.e. "just playing", then they essentially are saying that they have no faith in what they are posting or even worse that they actually feel just the opposite.Originally posted by Jigsaw:

This leaves the respondent with essentially two options: One, to take them at their word that they are being disingenuous and that therefore nothing they have to say can be trusted or has any real worth or Two, to take on the ideas presented independent of the person presenting them's flip flopping and treat them as if they were speaking their own real opinions.
I have opted to go with the second option as the views expressed by the self declared wafflers are indeed held by some and are worth discussing in and of themselves.
See, the problem with announcing to the online world at large that you don't mean what you say is that everyone will take you up on your assertion and not trust anything you have to say. It's a pretty good way of destroying any credibility you may have.
What's actually going on though is that it's a dodge, and a stupid one, to try and avoid responsibility for your stated beliefs. As I've said before it is used extensively by Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity, Coulter and all the rest of the hatemongers out there to try and deflect criticism. It only works on the simple minded which, regrettably, seem to be a fair portion of the populace.
If gae and trav are only funnin' us on, for instance, perhaps they would be so kind as to tell us just how their opinions posted here are actually different than the opinions they really hold. Shouldn't be a problem. Unless . . .
